Digital Privacy Settings

Digital privacy is about understanding what information an application can access, what it can share, and who can see what you publish. Privacy settings can help manage these choices, but they do not remove every risk. The names of settings differ between products.

Permissions and visibility are different

A permission controls access to a device resource, such as its microphone, camera, or location. A visibility setting controls who can see a post, profile, or shared document. An application can have camera permission while a particular photo remains private, or a document can be public even though no camera permission was requested.

Think about the task

A navigation application may need location information for directions. A note-taking application may need access only to a document you select. Compare a permission request with the task you intend to perform. Some systems offer choices such as access only while an application is in use or access to selected photos. Availability and wording vary.

Sharing a document

A link can grant different levels of access. “Anyone with the link” can be broader than a list of named recipients. “Can view” and “can edit” also describe different capabilities. Before sharing, consider the audience and whether editing is necessary. Removing access later cannot guarantee that someone has not already copied the contents.

What to look for in a privacy notice

A useful notice explains what information is collected, why it is used, who receives it, and what choices are available. A setting that hides activity from other users may not prevent the provider from processing that activity. Reading both the setting description and the privacy notice gives more context than either alone.

Learning exercise: Imagine a project plan should be readable by three classmates, but only one should edit it. Describe the audience and permission levels you would choose. A limited list of recipients with different viewing and editing permissions is more precise than a public editing link.
